Businesses in Buchanan open their doors every summer for the "On Location" program sponsored by Buchanan Middle School. Five students took part in the "On Location" program at Express-1 this year. Jon Moyer, Arie Boyer, Anna Callahan, Josh Boor, Zack Leitz, and their teacher, Tracey Jaggi, learned about our business and got to take part in the "happenings" in the various departments. Here is a brief summary of what they learned and what they did.
Express-1 is a freight expediter. That means we pick-up and deliver freight that has to be moved in a hurry. We haul anything and everything, as long as it's not considered hazardous. Here are of some of the unique things we have hauled …
- First aid supplies to NYC after 9/11
- Notre Dame football equipment
- Speakers to a Ricky Martin concert
- Microphones for a Hootie & the Blowfish concert
- Gold cash register to Disneyworld
- Lockers for the new Baltimore Ravens football stadium
- Hospital beds
- Cereal
- Flour
- Toilet paper
- Customer Service - listened in on customer order phone calls to learn what information we need to have in order to move freight
- Dispatch - listened in on phone calls to drivers to offer freight loads, update trip progress and use maps to locate the trucks or offer directions
- Driver Orientation - helped copy all of the documents required by the federal government to be maintained by Express-1 and make photo id's for the drivers
- Accounting - process incoming payments, create customer invoices
- Maintenance - help run cables in a truck cab for satellite tracking system
- HR - take photographs for this presentation
- IT - Internet research, build coaxial cables
- The kids had the opportunity to explore the inside of a straight-truck and sleeper with one of our owner/operators. They were able to see the two beds, microwave, refrigerator and port-a-potty! The kids also got to see how our driver uses a laptop that he keeps in the truck to help him find directions so that he won't get lost while he's on the road.
- They helped to run the cables for a satellite tracking system in a straight truck.
- The kids got to go for a ride in a straight-truck, a semi and a PT Cruiser this week!
- The kids were photographed and interviewed by the student group from the Berrien County Record for a feature article on the On-location program.
- Interviewed by WNDU-TV for a news story on the Buchanan Schools On-location program
We had a great group of kids! They were very enthusiastic and eager to learn. Express-1 is proud to be part of Buchanan Middle School's "On Location" program.
